Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard: each carrier uses different names and definitions for these health classifications.

Each carrier structures term life pricing by rate class. Although class labels shift between companies, the order stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes referred to as Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, followed by Standard, plus table ratings for elevated-risk applicants. Those with tobacco use occupy their own separate classes at raised rates.

What underwriters look at

Physical measurements (weight-to-height ratio), blood pressure, lipid panel, family health history, and previous diagnoses influence your rate.

How to use the quote tool

Answer truthfully about your health: Excellent health connects to Preferred Plus premiums, Very Good aligns with Preferred, Good corresponds to Standard Plus and Average to Standard. Your quotes show this class, though the carrier will verify the true class during underwriting. When in doubt, request quotes for two classes to compare side-by-side and allow the application to determine what's accurate. Inflating your health status won't improve the final rate—it only clouds your initial numbers.

Susman Insurance Agency helps you see carriers' pricing for your health profile—some want Preferred applicants, others welcome Standard ones.
